API
An API (Application Programming Interface) allows systems on the web to talk to each other. In the case of Curated, you can use our API to subscribe new email addresses to your publication or fetch the full content of published issues. Some development knowledge will be needed to interact with the Curated API. For more information, read Getting Started with the Curated API.
Bounce
When an email can’t be delivered to an email address we say it has ‘bounced’. When an email bounces they are classified as either a soft or hard bounce. Find out more about bounces and how Curated handles them by reading List Quality and Unsubscribes.
Category
The content you curate in each issue is organized by categories. You can define as many or as few categories as you wish and you do not need to use every category in each issue. Categories can be configured in the Curated Settings for your publication.
Click rate
Click rate is the percentage of registered subscribers who clicked at least one link anywhere in the issue. The number of subscribers is recorded at the time of publishing and used to calculate the percentage, this means that any new subscribers joining after the publishing date will not cause the percentage to become lower.
Collected items
The items that you have saved into Curated (usually via the bookmarklet or secret email address) but have not yet been moved into a specific issue, are referred to as collected items.
DKIM
DomainKeys Identified Mail is an email authentication method that adds a digital signature to the headers of the emails you send. It allows the receiving mail servers to verify that the message really comes from your domain and hasn’t been changed since you sent it. See Configuring SPF and DKIM records for more information.
Embedded link
Text that once clicked takes the reader to a different web page is referred to as an embedded link. Curated supports embedded links in all Markdown supported text fields and you can find out how to insert an embedded link in our Markdown Support document.
Issue
Your publication is comprised of issues that are published at the frequency of your choosing. They contain the curated content you wish to distribute to your subscribers.
Items
Items are the individual pieces of content that make up each issue. These can be either link items or text items depending on their purpose.
Link item
The majority of items you collect for your publication will be links to articles that you find interesting and want to share with your subscribers. Read How to collect links for details on adding link items to your publication.
Look and feel
This is the term we use to describe the visual aspect of your publication and encompasses options such as publication logo, fonts, header images, category icons, etc. that can be configured in your settings.
Markdown
Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool that makes it easy for people to write for the web without having to have knowledge of the necessary HTML tags. You can see examples of how to write in Markdown in our Markdown Support in Curated document.
Open rate
Open rate is the percentage of subscribers who opened the issue at least once. The number of subscribers is recorded at the time of publishing and used to calculate the percentage, this means that any new subscribers joining after the publishing date will not cause the percentage to become lower.
Publication
A publication is made up of issues and it is the publication itself that people subscribe to receive. Your account can contain multiple publications all of which are operated independently of each other within your account.
Schedule
Rather than publishing an issue immediately, you could choose to schedule the issue to be published at a specific time and date in the future. This is particularly helpful if you know you are busy or traveling at your usual publishing time. You can read more about scheduling an issue in Planning, Scheduling, and Publishing Issues.
Spam
Spam complaints happen when a recipient flags your email as being unsolicited and can happen even if the email is legitimate. Find out more about emails marked as spam and how Curated handles them by reading List Quality and Unsubscribes.
SPF
Sender Policy Framework is a simple email validation system that identifies which mail servers are permitted to send an email on behalf of your domain, helping to identify spammers using forged sender addresses in emails. See Configuring SPF and DKIM records for more information.
Text item
Text items are often used for introductions or summaries within issues and are created manually.
Tokens
Tokens are placeholders that can be used to show contextual information in your publication. Curated currently supports two tokens: %%publication_subscribers%% will be replaced with the live number of subscribers you have, and %%publication_name%% will enter your publication’s name.
Total clicks
Total clicks are the sum of all clicks on links in an issue. This includes clicks that were not able to be attributed to a specific subscriber (for example, clicks from the web version of the published issue).
Unique clicks
If a subscriber clicks the same link twice, this will count as two total clicks, but just one unique click. In other words, the number of unique clicks on a particular link is equal to the number of individuals who clicked on that link. Like total clicks, these clicks can come from the web where we use a cookie to track uniqueness.
UTM
The addition of UTM parameters to URLs passes information about the source of incoming traffic to a website which can be interpreted and reported in web analytics software, such as Google Analytics. See Understanding UTM Parameters for more information.
Zapier
Zapier is a tool that connects web apps automatically and helps to automate workflows. For example every time you could set up a connection that Tweets a link to your latest issue each time you publish. See Integrating Curated with Zapier for more information.
